Punchy Company, An Intimate Portrait

The following extract provides a taste of Punchy Company, A Memoir of the Cold War, 1969-1974.  I hope it whets your appetite for more.  It is an adventurous story, true an unembellished; a report of what one soldier’s experience looked like, sounded like, smelled like, but most of all what it felt like.  Why Punchy Company?  Well, Punchy Company is an appellation coined by some unknown Korean National, who, on first seeing the unit’s patch, saw in it a fist or “punch,” hence the name.  Punchy Company 2-71 ADAPunchy Company, the 38th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, consisted of a Headquarters and Headquarters Company, and five missile battalions: four HAWK and one Hercules.  Its mission: defend South Korean air space.  It was manned by 9,000 soldiers whose tour of duty was one year.  During her Korean deployment then, 1961-1981, 180,000 soldiers served within her ranks.  Unlike other memoirs of the times, this one holds nothing back:
